Chest Binding Safely With ContourMD

Beginning to bind means beginning to affirm your identity, while becoming more comfortable with the way your body looks. The early days of binding are exciting ones. It’s often when you begin to feel and become more like yourself.

When it comes to chest binding, it’s important to remember that safety and comfort go hand in hand. To help you find your right binding garments and techniques we put together to help you safely chest bind whether you’re just beginning or you do it daily.

Why Binding?

Chest binding is the process of restricting and compressing breast tissue to create a smooth silhouette. This is often done through either sports bras, bandages, or compression garments. Compression garments often provide the “best” or smoothest result and are a very safe option, when used correctly.

Binding may be used by individuals as a means of expressing their true gender or in preparation for chest reconstruction surgery. However, many individuals may experience different pains or discomforts associated with the act of chest binding. When done incorrectly, binding can lead to discomfort in the back, chest, shoulders, and breast tissue. Due to the pressure and friction against the skin, They may also encounter skin irritations, difficulty breathing, dizziness, numbness, or other respiratory issues.

But often the benefits of binding far outweigh the discomforts. Binding allows individuals to feel and present themselves as their true gender. Chest binding is associated with increased confidence and self-esteem, along with decreased levels of anxiety and depression. This is why learning proper methods of chest binding and using high-quality compression garments are so important. By selecting ContourMD garments and support for this process, you can ensure a comfortable and compassionate compression experience.

Binding Basics.

Let’s just start with the basics, and go from there?

First, you should never NEVER use tape or plastic wrap for binding purposes. No matter what you read online, this is not easy, comfortable, or budget-friendly. These methods are extremely unsafe and should not be used. What should you use to bind your chest? Safest methods include sports bras, bandages, and specially designed compression garments. Also, it is important to take frequent breaks or even days off of binding, as it can become exhausting on your chest, breathing, and skin.

People bind their chests in many ways including wrapping with elastic bandages, wearing athletic compression gear, strategic layering of sports bras and compression shirts and using commercial binders that are designed specifically to reduce the appearance of breasts.

Binding For Larger Chests.

Because everybody is different, remember to tailor these steps to what feels right and comfortable to you. It may take some trial and error to find the right method for you, and that’s okay. This is your journey and ContourMD is here to offer support every step of the way.

The first step is getting into your binder in the first place. It can be challenging, especially with a larger chest.

ContourMD makes a variety of binder products and binder alternatives like compression vests that you can either step into, wrap-around, or zip up. Try different ways of getting into your binder, or try another type of binder to find what is most comfortable for you. Remember, you’ll probably want to wear it for as long as possible, so that is something to consider, as well!

And don’t worry if you need to adjust it throughout the day, or take frequent breaks at first. Experiment to find what type of binder works best for your body and your comfort. Buy the highest quality binder you can afford, and it will do wonders for your skin and comfort.

Pro tips:

  • Don’t wear two binders (or two sports bras, or a binder over a sports bra) at once, as this can do irreversible damage to your lungs and ribs. Even if you know others who seem to be fine with this method, in the long term it’s not feasible for your health.
  • Get the proper size for your body! Don’t size down thinking the result will be a flatter chest. The result will just be a lot of pain and maybe some rolling.
  • Take a picture of yourself with the binder on underneath a shirt for the most accurate representation of how you’ll look out there in the world. Just like those side-profile progress pictures you see in gyms and on fitness posters, photographic evidence is the best way of seeing how others will see you!
  • Take extra breaks! You may already be used to taking more breaks simply from having a larger chest… wearing a binder for 6-8 hours with a large chest won’t come naturally, so remember to ease into it and give your body time to adjust.
  • Finally, never wear a binder overnight and never wear one while exercising as your muscles and chest need to move to react to your exercises.

How to go about taking breaks

Try to think of your schedule and use a day planner to track when you’ll be wearing a binder, if possible. Not only does this help keep track of your day-to-day life, but it also allows you to find small windows where you could be giving your body a break from binding for a while.

For example, it might not be necessary to wear while working from home but you may want to wear it before going out with friends for dinner. Being kind to your body is the best way to ensure success.

It’s important to remain safe while binding, especially if you are considering top surgery, as it can affect the elasticity of your skin and your recovery post-op.

When you can, consider wearing a sports bra instead of a binder. Some bras provide a lot of compression and if you have a smaller chest, this may be suitable for everyday use.

Risks to be aware of

As we mentioned, there are some risks to be aware of that are associated with binding.

Because of the compressive nature of binding, it can affect your skin, muscles, and movement. Especially as you sweat throughout the day, and you will sweat more with a binder on. It becomes very easy for bacterial or fungal infections to develop. It is important to clean the area regularly when you are giving your body a break from binding and to wash your binder regularly.

Binders that are too tight can also cause nerve and muscle damage. They can even restrict your breathing or cause you to develop GI issues.

At ContourMD, we have been designing and manufacturing these products here in America for close to 30 years. We are always happy to lend an ear and provide our expert advice regarding sizing, product selection, or proper care for your garments.

Wearing Daily Shapewear After Gastric Bypass

What’s the deal with Shapewear and how can it help me look thinner?

After undergoing a gastric bypass procedure, many people aren’t able to remove the excess skin right away but don’t worry! There are solutions that can help in this situation. Many who do not have their excess skin removed right away (or at all) choose to wear compression garments or shapewear to help keep the loose skin tucked against you comfortably to prevent chaffing and irritation.

These garments can help in more ways than just aesthetics, though. Some of the benefits of wearing shapewear compression garments after gastric bypass procedures include:

  • Helps smooth the look of loose skin while keeping it from causing pain due to its weight
  • To further shape and reduce your waist line
  • Improve posture while providing back support, which can be required after surgery

You will want to confirm directly with your surgeon when you can begin wearing ContourMD’s compression garments and shapewear, after your gastric bypass surgery.

Everyone’s recovery schedule is different and it’s important to be aware of your options and benefits of shapewear/compression gear post-surgery. Ask your surgeon if you are curious about whether compression and shapewear are safe for you. Compression can be a beneficial recovery tool after your surgery, as the recovery garments can help reduce bruising and swelling, improve/maintain your new figure, and even reduce the appearance of scars in the long term. Patients often find compression or shapewear to be very comfortable once you get used to it because it provides a sort of stability uniform compression that helps with circulation as well as, “keeping everything in place”.

Shapewear for loose skin is not only comfortable, you practically forget about it once you start wearing it regularly. It can also help you feel more secure in your new body, as it helps to keep things looking smooth and under control.

Why do I need to wear shapewear after gastric bypass surgery?

As a category of clothing, shapewear has continued to evolve over the years, and is widely accepted as a useful host of garments to help reduce sagging while improving elasticity of the skin.

In addition to post-gastric bypass surgery, people wear shapewear for a variety of reasons including post-pregnancy, in the gym, in the later stages after other surgeries, under “fancy clothing” to look good for special events or even just as a daily accessory to help accentuate your natural curves.

Shapewear helps stimulate heat and blood flow/circulation to the affected area, which improves healing and the look/elasticity of the skin in that area.

At ContourMD, we take great pride in creating some of the highest quality (affordable!) shapewear in the USA. In fact, we have been designing and producing our shapewear here in

America for over 30 years, so you know you’re getting the best quality available.

Our products are durable and all custom fitted (so make sure your measurements are accurate!) and as a result, we are ideal for daily wear. We recommend buying at least two of your favorite shapewear accessories so you can continue wearing one while the other is being washed/dried (always air dry your shapewear!).

Recovery From Breast Augmentation

What to expect at each stage.

Year after year, breast augmentation is one of the most requested and most popular cosmetic surgeries on the plastic surgery circuit.

ContourMD recognizes that this surgery is life changing for many, and because of this, it’s important to know exactly what you’re in for when it comes to the recovery process. If you know anyone who has had a breast augmentation, it can be easy to fantasize about the results. But what you didn’t see was the many weeks and different phases of recovery the body goes through post-operation.

Knowing what you’re in for when you make plans for a breast augmentation can be helpful when it comes to planning your schedule around major events, work, and life in general, and it can also provide some peace of mind regarding recovery and timeline expectations.

We’re all about making your recovery process as stress-free as possible, so here’s what you need to know about your breast augmentation recovery!

What is breast augmentation surgery?

First up, it’s important to understand what exactly this surgery is and what’s involved so that you can plan your recovery accordingly.

Breast augmentation is also known as augmentation mammoplasty, and is a cosmetic surgery for increasing the size of a person’s breasts, typically through implants. Sometimes, instead of implants, fat from another part of the body is used but this is not common practice.

The goal of this surgery is usually to:

  • Enhance the physical appearance of the breasts

  • Reconstruct breasts post-mastectomy or other breast surgery

  • Make the breast size and appearance more even

  • Augment the breasts post-pregnancy/breastfeeding

  • Adjust the body for either male-to-female or male-to-nonbinary top surgery

On average, recovery from this type of surgery takes 6-8 weeks, depending on your health status pre-operation.

You can learn more about your options regarding breast augmentation surgery by speaking to a surgeon about the operation and recovery process.

Here’s a little more on what to expect out of the breast augmentation recovery process (or recovery after having my implants removed).

How long is the recovery process?

As mentioned, the recovery process is typically 6-8 weeks long. ContourMD has segmented the recovery process into Stages based on your anticipated status and the associated recovery garments you should be wearing during this time.

Stage 1

Stage 1 in recovery from breast augmentation surgery is weeks 1-2 post-operation. In this stage, following the procedure, bandages, a compression garment, and surgical drains are positioned by your surgeon or medical team.

During these weeks you’ll want to be completely off of work, resting as much as possible.

Stage 1 garments promote healing and provide comfort by lessening fluid buildup, reducing swelling, and preventing bruising. Stage 1 garments provide the required stability to the area and also work to keep the surgical site together.

These garments will also help improve the body’s natural contour post-surgery and can reduce the appearance of scars.

Recommended garments

In Stage 1 you will wear the required garments at all times except when bathing.

PowerNet Compression Bra With Sleeves – Made with high quality lycra spandex, a breathable fabric offering maximum medical grade compression, and comfort. The hook and eye front closure is convenient and easy to maneuver after surgery. The molded lace cups also offer additional stability and the reinforced sleeves provide additional support and circulation to improve drainage while reducing the risk of infection.

Bra With Sleeves By Contour – Constructed with high quality soft-knitted lycra spandex to provide maximum compression and comfort. The molded lace cups and reinforced sleeves provide firm support and stability. Front hook-and-eye closures provide convenient and easy access post-surgery.

SP Bandeau Bra – The bandeau bra was designed with the help of surgeons to ensure maximum compression and comfort as you recover. The bandeau bra helps to keep breast implants in place while stabilizing your torso’s new shape. This model also utilizes a hook-and-eye enclosure.

It is suggested that you purchase two garments so that while one is in the wash, the other is readily available.

Stage 2

Stage 2 is typically 2 weeks long, weeks 3-4 post-operation. During this stage you will notice considerably less fluid buildup and can switch to less compressive garments.

You’ll be feeling more like yourself and can return to some light activities at the approval of your surgeon. You will still be wearing your compression garments around the clock but they will be less compressive as your body begins to heal and your circulation naturally returns to the area.

Recommended garments

Cup Bra – The cup bra provides soft comfort through its nylon blended fabric and (contrary to the namesake) non-cupped design. This bra offers maximum gentle compression against your skin so you will be comfortable as you recover. The traditional front hook-and-eye closure provides a supportive ease of fit and easy access for checkups. Plus, enjoy a smooth appearance under clothing.

Surgical Bra – The surgical bra is to be worn in Stage 2 and offers gentle support while still fully compressing the area. Made with lycra cotton for a soft feel against the skin with a Z hook on the front and back for efficient access to surgical areas (during checkups). The adjustable shoulder straps and extra wide band at the bottom provide additional comfort control.

SP Cover Bra – The SP cover bra provides compression and stability with the help of velcro bands that support your new shape. The molded cups also provide proper targeted support for accurate healing as your chest wall muscles adjust. Both front and back hook-and-eye closures provide efficient access. This bra provides maximum support during the healing process, and a smooth appearance for use under clothing.

You will feel just as comfortable wearing your garment as you will buying products from ContourMD. Shop in confidence as we have been designing and producing compression garments for over 30 years, working directly with cosmetic surgeons to construct the perfect products for your new shape, with medical grade compression.

Stage 3

Stage 3 will be the final 2 weeks to one month of recovery after having breast implants (or removing them). During this time you may feel almost 100% (that’s great!) but ensure you are cleared by your surgeon before performing any of your regular activities or returning to strength training (if that is an activity you enjoyed before your procedure).

In Stage 3 you may enjoy wearing some of your recovery bras as the compression can feel nice and supportive on your chest. This is totally normal and fine as long as your surgeon approves the extended wear of these garments.

Some people choose to wear less compressive Shapewear during this time. Still offering more support than traditional bras, but slightly less than medical grade compression, shapewear is a comfortable alternative to other garments that provides an aesthetically pleasing look, as well.

Recommended garments

Consider wearing the Cup Bra, SP Cover Bra (both from Stage 2), CareFix Catia Microfiber Comfort Bra, Semi-Shape Compression Bra With Adjustable Straps, or the Zippered Sport Bra.

Additional accessories

In addition to your recovery garments it is recommended to purchase a gentle garment wash like our Variance Fabric Wash Liquid.

Available in a 16oz bottle, this liquid is an advanced cleaning agent specially designed to clean compression and support garments. Variance ensures quick breakdown and suspension of blood residue and bio-burdens in the fabric. By proper cleansing, the compression garment fibers are restored and the life of the garment is extended. Common petroleum based soaps and detergents leave a residue on fibers that will attract dirt, dull color and luster, as well as deteriorate the prescribed pressure of the garment.

It is also recommended that you have two of each type of support garment that is recommended to you by your doctor, as you will need one to wear while the other is being washed. It is recommended to wash your garments every 1-2 days.

For more information on how to care for your recovery garments you can visit our blog here.

Scar Fx Silicone Sheet – Recommended by plastic surgeons and dermatologists, Scar Fx Silicone Sheet (w/Self Adhesive Side) is medically proven in helping reduce the appearance, size, height, thickness, and color of scars for all skin types and color.

Scar Fx works well on both new and old scars regardless of the age of the scar, and can be used on all types of post-surgery scars, and many others. It can be used to reduce the appearance of scars after a breast augmentation surgery or removal of breast implants.

We always talk about what to expect when you’re expecting… but what about what to expect when you’re taking on a mommy makeover?

What exactly is a mommy makeover?

What does a mommy makeover involve?

What should you wear after a mommy makeover?

What does a mommy makeover recovery process look like?

So many questions and so much confusion, we wanted to help you sort through the noise and find the truth about Mommy Makeovers.

What exactly is a mommy makeover?

A mommy makeover refers to the process of restoring and reviving ones post-pregnancy body to what it once was, to help mommy feel like herself again. The name seems all encompassing, and that’s because it is. A mommy makeover can refer to a number of procedures that will be tailored and recommended to you specifically by your doctor and/or surgeon. Because everybody is different and every pregnancy is unique, recommendations for mommy makeovers will vary from person to person, depending on the situation. And while it is popular to believe that celebrities undergo mommy makeovers mere weeks after giving birth to restore their pre-pregnancy bodies, it’s simply not true. This would be unsafe for the mother and is not advised. It is our recommendation that everyone discuss recovery plans and post-pregnancy cosmetic procedures directly with their doctors. But it is true that some mothers seem to regain their previous physical appearance faster than others post-pregnancy. This is usually because they are working with nutritionists, physical trainers, and of course, might have the option of having some cosmetic work done.

What does a mommy makeover involve?

A mommy makeover could involve a number of cosmetic treatments including: breast lift or augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, or labiaplasty.

A breast lift/augmentation would be required for women who are in their 30s-40s after giving birth because the breasts expand and contract dramatically during milk production. Once milk production is completed and your baby is weaned, breasts tend to drop back down to their original size (sometimes several cups smaller) leaving behind stretched skin and frankly, saggier breasts. An easy way to tell if you would be eligible for a breast augmentation or lift is if your nipples are pointing straight down, rather than out.

Another potential mommy makeover solution would be liposuction. Liposuction is when fat is removed via a tubal insert. This could be from a number of areas on the body but most likely the tummy/midsection and/or butt and thighs. Liposuction might be necessary before a tummy tuck but not always. If you have stubborn belly fat after a pregnancy (or any time, really), liposuction could be an option for you.

As mentioned, a tummy tuck may be another option you’d like to consider as part of your mommy makeover. This allows you to tighten your stomach skin and muscles that may be weak from pregnancy. It can also be used to help incontinence or unwanted urine flow after pregnancy. Finally, part of a mommy makeover surgery could include a labiaplasty. If there is any uncomfortable or undesirable stretching of the labia minora after childbirth, a labiaplasty is advised.

What should you wear after a mommy makeover?

As you can tell, a mommy makeover can be an intense process and will definitely vary from mother to mother. Because of this, recommending recovery garments is not a “one size fits all” approach.

Here’s what we’d recommend wearing after each procedure:

Breast lift/augmentation – Post-breast augmentation there are various stages of recovery requiring a range of compression garments to help you heal quickly and comfortably. These include the compression bras with sleeves, bandeau bra, and the surgical bra or cover bra.

You can learn more about the various stages of recovery from breast augmentation here.

Liposuction – Recovering from liposuction can be a long recovery process if the right garments are not used. Of course, discuss this directly with your surgeon before your procedure, but to give you an idea, typical garments tend to include: girdles of various heights (depending on where the procedure is targeted), high waisted bodysuit garments, and body shapers.

You can learn more about the various stages of recovery from liposuction here.

Tummy tuck – Abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck) surgery is another potentially long recovery process without the right garments. You’ll likely be recommended to wear a variety of highly compressive girdles, body briefs, abdominal binders/boards and contouring body suits as part of the recovery process.

You can learn more about the various stages of recovery from tummy tuck surgery here.

Labiaplasty – It is likely you will be recommended to wear some compressive panties to remain comfortable and improve the healing process after a labiaplasty.

You can find our compressive panties and girdle products here.

What does a mommy makeover recovery process look like?

Keep in mind that some mommy makeover procedures are completing two surgeries at once. While you can absolutely schedule them separately to best accommodate your schedule, it may be advisable to do both at once or within a close time frame to avoid extending the recovery time.

You will be in recovery for at least 8-10 weeks so be sure to schedule your surgeries with potential future events in mind. For example, if you love running in the summer maybe don’t schedule your surgery at the start of the season you’re most fond of.

And keep in mind that you’re going to be uncomfortable for at least a month. Many patients start to feel “normal” again after 3-4 weeks but everyone is different and every recovery period is different, so this might not be the same for you.

To give you a better idea of the recovery process, we have included a rough week by week schedule below:

WEEK 1 – this is the most intense part of recovery and to be honest, you will probably block it out from your memory as you will be on some intense painkillers during this time. You won’t be doing much other than sleeping, eating, and walking to the bathroom to get your circulation flowing. Your compression garments will be your best friends as they provide a steady and uniform comfortable compression on the areas that are sore. You won’t be driving, cooking, or doing any of your “normal” tasks.

WEEK 2 – compared to Week 1, this will be like a 100% improvement. You won’t be on the narcotics (pain killers) any longer, aside from Tylenol and ibuprofen, if advised by your surgeon. Valium might be recommended at night for muscle relaxation and sleep. You will be permitted to drive this week (because no more narcotics) but it is not advisable to drive for long periods. You might need to take naps or rests throughout the day because you are still recovering from intense surgery. Taking short walks outside is definitely encouraged for circulation. Keep resting!

WEEK 3 – this third week is sometimes unpredictable. Patients may either experience significant improvements in energy and swelling, or they may still be healing slowly. If you’re experiencing the latter, you might be frustrated with your situation, but you still need to take it easy. It’s also common to feel completely exhausted by the end of the workday, so you should still ask for help with your daily tasks.

WEEK 4 – you’ll be shedding a lot of your super compressive gear and trading it in for shapewear or simply wearing it intermittently, as your muscles will have healed properly in their places by now. Depending on what your doctor says you may be able to engage in light cardio activity, but stop if there is any pain. There may still be some swelling and bruising, but far less than the first few weeks. You’ll be able to start wearing your “regular” pre-surgery clothing again and can go to the office for work.

WEEKS 5 AND 6 – start enjoying your mommy makeover results! While you might need to wait a few weeks to hit the gym again, you will feel mostly back to normal by these weeks. Swelling is mostly gone and you will look and feel good (maybe even start buying some new clothes).

And there you have it, your mommy makeover recovery timeline is around six weeks to “normalcy” but it’s important to remember every body heals at a different rate and you should take care to speak with your doctor.  It’s really a small price to pay to look and feel like your pre-pregnancy self.

How To Care For Your New Shapewear

We all know how much an investment recovery and shapewear are.  Quality costs up front but the cost per wear is small because custom made garments longer lasting than mass produced counterparts. As with any high quality clothing or under garments, the lifespan of the garment is directly related to how well you care for it. Now, you may be wondering how do I take care of my shapewear?

Through regular care, these pieces last a lot longer than lower quality shapewear brands which explains the slightly higher initial investment. ContourMD’s custom made recovery garments and shapewear are guaranteed but they last longest when cared for properly.  While the garments themselves should last a long time due to their quality, their lives are extended even further when cared for properly. Taking care of your recovery or shapewear helps ensure it stays compressive, elastic, and comfortable for the lifespan of the garment.

Wearing Shapewear for Longevity

If you wear shapewear everyday, not just on special occasions, it’s definitely best to have at least two pairs of shapewear so that you can alternate between them, and have a pair to wear while the other is being washed. We recommend two in your favorite shade and an extra for dressing up needs.

By giving the fabric a day to “recover” and regain some of its elasticity between uses, you are extending the life of the elastic and of the garment as a whole. While it may seem counterintuitive, having multiple pairs of a garment will extend the life of each garment individually. Think about your shoes. The ones you wear daily break down quicker, those that get rotated out have a longer lifespan. Same for the elastic in your shapewear, you place less stress on the garment by not wearing them on a daily basis.

It’s important to keep in mind that shapewear counts as an undergarment, even if it’s worn over your standard undergarments. Because it has direct contact with your skin, the oils and dirt that is expelled by your pores tends to break down the fabric so you’ll want to wash them every 1-2 wears. This is for sanitary reasons, they absorb the sweat from your body and can develop an odor, this also extends the life of the garment by removing the oils that break down the elastic.

Washing Shapewear for Longevity

You absolutely can and should be washing your shapewear on a regular basis. As we mentioned, every 1-2 wears you should be giving them a clean. It doesn’t have to be an intense spin on the industrial cycle, but just a quick and gentle wash with your delicates. We recommend a mesh laundry bag to keep snaps, hooks and zippers safe.

How to Wash Your Shapewear

  1. When machine washing, use a detergent for sensitive skin to prevent unexpected reactions.
  2. Wash by hand in the sink but as we all know this takes a lot of time. It will extend the life of your pieces but you may not have the time to dedicate – gentle cycle is fine but using the mesh laundry bag is best in the machine.
  3. Your washer will automatically use COLD water for the gentle cycle but if you’re washing by hand, make sure to rinse cold or super low temperature. You know how dermatologists recommend rinsing your skin with cold water after washing your face to close your pores and keep your skin’s elasticity up? It’s pretty much the same principle here.
  4. Pro tip: don’t use the spin cycle or twist the garments to ring out water! They need to drip dry.
  5. Whatever you do, please do NOT put your shapewear in the dryer. Not only does it break down the fabric and alter the appearance of the clothing, it ruins the elasticity and compressive factors that shapewear has to offer and can actually warp the garment.
  6. No one wants to look lumpy, that’s why we buy shapewear in the first place so please, don’t dry the pieces in your dryer. This is also why we recommend having more than 1 piece of shapewear if you are a daily user, so your other pieces have time to dry flat.

Conclusion

It might seem like a big commitment to care for your shapewear, but in reality, this is how your regular undergarments should be cared for as well. If you’re one of those notorious “once a month bra washers,”  this is your sign to stop that habit and get into the good one of 1-2 wears per wash. Your garments will thank you & so will your clothing budget.

According to Psychology Today, everyone is gender-fluid to a degree. That’s because traditionally, people have been expected to behave or look a certain way on the basis of their biological sex. These days, people are becoming more aware of and challenging modes of thinking that make it harder for people to express themselves through dress, style, and other personal choices.

To be clear, people who are gender-fluid generally don’t have a strong attachment to any gender, and may feel more traditionally masculine or feminine depending on the day. Though the phrase gender-fluid is often used interchangeably with nonbinary—not associating with any gender—people who are gender-fluid may or not be nonbinary.

Depending on the way they wish to express themselves, shape-wear may help certain people feel more comfortable.

  • It may enable people to express themselves more fully and affirm their gender or wear drag.

  • It’s less invasive and risky than surgery, and involves less commitment.

  • It allows people to feel more comfortable in their bodies on any given day, and can be done for a prolonged period of time if precautions are taken.

Though shape-wear such as chest binders and other items are temporary, there are a few things to remember.

  • Make sure to use the right size. Loose garments won’t pose much problems, but they’ll be uncomfortable.

  • Tight garments or chest binders can be painful to wear for long periods and can eventually cause breathing issues or skin scarring if worn for days on end.

Here are some compression garments or shape-wear you can use to change your appearance without surgery.

Chest Binders

There are many reasons why some people consider a chest binder. Often, they will help you present as male by making the chest look flatter, though they’re a common drag, cosplay, and role-play. Wearing a chest binder can also be helpful for people who have chest dysphoria.

Layering shirts, kinetic tape, and wearing sports bras are common ways to bind one’s chest, but commercial chest binders come in many sizes, colors, and designs. The most common you will find anywhere include:

  • Tops that look like sports bras

  • Compression chest binders cut off at the belly button

  • Binders that go all the way down to your waist

Girdles

Girdles were traditionally a women’s only item and often worn to cinch one’s waist and change one’s shape. They’re often associated with people who want to present as female, as girdles flatten the belly and accentuate hips. Some can even help you reduce the appearance of back fat and love-handles depending on how high up they go.

Girdles are still a handy item to keep around if you’re agender, as they are generally easy to remove depending on the kind you buy.

Common types include:

  • Slimmer thongs

  • Boy short girdles

  • Shape-wear bras (commonly used to smooth out back fat)

  • Mid-thing shapers (scuba suits)

Full Body Compression Suits

These compression suits often reach from your shoulders to the bottom of your thighs to make you look leaner overall. They come in a variety of materials and designs. Some of these have openings in the fly area to better help you go to the bathroom and resemble the look of rompers. Others look almost like dresses.

Safety Tips for Choosing a Girdle or Full-body Shape-wear

Shape-wear can better help you feel more authentic in your gender expression and can help you accentuate or diminish the appearance of some of your features. It’s critical that you find one that fits you just right so you can avoid some of the common risks associated with them, such as:

  • Skin irritation caused by the chemicals used to make materials so stretchy or by wearing the shape-wear for too long.

  • Constriction of blood. Shape-wear won’t cause permanent damage to your body, but it can cut off your blood circulation and even cause acid reflux if it’s too tight. Make sure your shape-wear isn’t leaving any marks on your skin. If it is, choose the next bigger size.

Finding the right shape-wear, regardless of which is right for you, will take a few tries. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or experiment, and as always please reach out to us with any questions and we’ll help you find your perfect fit.

Looking to change your appearance without spending months hitting the gym or opting for the more expensive cosmetic surgery route? Shapewear could be your new contouring best friend. Think of it as an instant fix without permanent commitment or cost.

Let’s start by covering a few basics. Shapewear isn’t meant to permanently alter your physical appearance and it certainly isn’t meant to be worn continuously. When fitted correctly, shapewear can even be, dare we say, comfortable? In fact, many people are using shapewear on a regular basis to enhance their natural appearance and change their body shape appearance without expensive surgery.

What is Shapewear?

People of all ages and physiques are flocking to shapewear to help achieve their desired body aesthetic. Whether you’re looking for more curves, less curves, accents in the right places, or simply a flatter midsection, shapewear can help you achieve this goal.

If you’re completely new to the concept of compression and/or shapewear, let us fill you in. Shapewear is a type of compression garment that can be worn by both patients after surgery and those who are simply looking for a comfortable, easy-to-wear product that improves their natural shape and contour. And we’ll quickly note that shapewear does not have the same medical compression capabilities as, say, Stage I or Stage II compression garments that you would use after procedures like liposuction or cosmetic surgery. It has more give making it ideal for daily wear.

Shapewear can be a long-term solution for those who have received some sort of cosmetic surgery or are looking to maintain and emphasize their body’s shape. For example, shapewearcan be worn as a means of gender affirmation, to look more feminine, to look more androgynous, or to look more masculine. There are many non-surgical options out there, you just need to find the one that works for you. We’ve touched a little on how shapewear can help you achieve your desired aesthetic, but let’s expand on this topic by going over some more specific shapewear pieces that help you achieve a specific goal.

Changing Your Body Shape

As we’ve mentioned, spending hours in the gym and dieting with seemingly no end in sight may get you closer to where you want to be but it’s not instant and you still may never get the lines you’re looking for. Achieving, not to mention maintaining, a flat stomach is extremely difficult for some people. There is both physical and mental strain and it’s not always something you can maintain long term. But if you want to look and feel your best, there are alternatives to slaving away in the gym and kitchen.

People of all ages and physiques are flocking to shapewear to help achieve their desired body aesthetic. Whether you’re looking for more curves, less curves, accents in the right places, or simply a flatter midsection, shapewear can help you achieve this goal. You can’t choose where your body likes to hold fat, but you can choose the garments and undergarments you wear to accent your body the way you like it.

Use shapewear to change your body shape for special occasions under dress clothing (psst, all celebrities do this for every A-list event) or find pieces that work for your wardrobe on a regular basis. We’ll be here to help with any questions along the way.

Gender Affirming Shapewear

Another major benefit to shapewear is its versatility. There are many different types of shapewear for many different purposes. Gender affirmation is one of them. Whether you are currently transitioning or simply want to enhance your appearance to best suit your true gender, shapewear can help you achieve your goals.

From binders and abdominal boards to appear more masculine or bodysuits and brief shapers or girdles to appear more feminine, shapewear can do it all. If you have questions about which pieces could be right to help you achieve your desired look, please let us know and our expert staff would be happy to help!

How to Look More Feminine

Shapewear can help you achieve a classic hourglass shape by cinching the areas that are traditionally more “masculine” like the waist, and helping to provide a more curvy silhouette. Click the image to browse our entire collection of shapers, girdles and bras.

Our full bodysuits which help create the illusion of an hourglass shape & provide easy access when nature calls. Can be worn with inserts or without.

High waisted girdles can help you contour a more shapely derriere without costly surgery or hours doing squats. Add in hip and thigh pads to increase the curves. Click below to see our girdle collection.

If you want to enhance your upper body, we suggest our bra shapers, which can be worn with inserts or with your natural figure. Available in multiple shades and custom sizes to fit you.

How to Look More Androgynous

Many of our shapewear pieces can also be used to achieve an androgynous look that helps you to feel comfortable in your own body, which is the ultimate goal!

If you want to go for a more hourglass androgynous shape, consider using one of our bodysuits which come in a variety of fits and styles to work with your life.

You may also consider high waisted options with a bra top. These individual pieces are easy options together or separate.

If you’re going for a more squared off look, consider using a
binder
abdominal board
compression vest

These options, worn daily under your regular clothing can provide you with an outward appearance that more geniunely reflects who you are.

How to Look More Masculine

If your goal is to reduce your curves, there are plenty of options. Depending on the goal you will find our compression & shapewear vests to be a great option for day to day wear.

Our abdominal boards can also help you reduce the appearance of curves under your clothes comfortably as well as our custom fitted binders which can be worn however you choose.

As you can see, shapewear helps us achieve way more than just compression and smoothing fine lines under clothing. It helps us to be who we really are and embrace our identity through the clothing we enjoy wearing, and provides confidence in our appearances. No matter what any “wellness coach” might say, feeling comfortable in your own skin is hard to do. Anything that helps us to be comfortable with our appearance is an investment worth making, in our opinion.

Investing in shapewear pieces that suit your lifestyle and wardrobe can help achieve so much more than just a sleeker appearance. It can provide peace of mind knowing we’re venturing out into the world as who we are truly meant to be, and that is a good feeling! If you have questions about shapewear or want to learn more about what pieces might be right for your body type, don’t hesitate to send us a message or check out our website here

Daily Compression Wear

Do you wear compression wear? This gear is a staple in many people’s daily wardrobe whether it’s for working out, shaping their body under their clothing (shapewear), or as a medical device for a number of purposes. High performance athletes wear compression wear for improved performance, but you don’t need to be a sports star to wear compression wear on a regular basis.

In fact, there are many benefits to wearing compression gear regularly. But, like anything else, before you get started you should know your options and know whether compression wear might be a good option for you to wear every day.

What is compression wear?

All of our garments are Made in America by our team of expert Seamstresses.

Compression wear might look like a tight or sleek sports garments or a silky undergarment with a slight sheen to it. The material is woven very tightly and consistently in order to provide a comfortable support while restricting the movement of your body. These garments give a feeling of support to your body’s tissues while you are moving around or working out, which many find to be comfortable.

And don’t worry, you can move around without restriction. If you can’t there is a chance your compression wear is way too tight.

Types of compression wear

There are different types or “grades” of compression wear depending on how tightly the fabric is woven. Compression wear that is designed for daily use tends to be woven slightly less tight in order to provide enough comfortable compression while still allowing ease of movement and unrestricted support.

Compression wear that is “medical grade” is woven more tightly as it is designed to be worn after surgery or as a medical device for a specific purpose with regards to circulation. These types of medical grade garments should be recommended by your physician before use, as compression wear isn’t necessarily safe for everybody if you have underlying conditions.

Sports wear and shapewear compression are likely not medical grade but you can check with a sales representative if you’re unsure.

Compression wear for daily use

In addition to compression wear for athletes, compression wear for daily use can be beneficial to those with extra weight or extra skin on their body, as it provides a unique type of support that is not often found in other types of clothing.

Not only does compression wear provide support for your body as you go about your daily routine, it helps improve circulation throughout the area of use. So if you spend a lot of time on your feet, wearing daily compression wear or shapewear on your lower half could be beneficial to help you keep your blood flowing.

As a result, at the end of a long day you may feel “fresher” than you have previously, since your body has been circulating blood and repairing any muscle fatigue or micro tears that would normally have occurred on a regular basis.

Buying compression wear for daily use

There’s more to buying compression wear than just selecting a tight garment or piece of clothing that feels “too small”. As mentioned, compression garments shouldn’t be too tight or feel like they’re cutting off your circulation. As a result, high quality compression gear will always be custom sized. You will need to take your measurements and apply them using a sizing chart provided by the company you’ll be ordering your compression gear from.

The type of compression wear that you choose to buy will depend on your body’s measurements and your goals for getting the wear. An easy way to get started is through compression tights or shorts, as your lower half is required for most day-to-day activities that may benefit from compression wear.

These garments tend to also provide a smoother and sometimes “ideal” silhouette. Whether this was your intention for selecting shapewear to wear on a daily basis, or a nice additional benefit of your compression wear for health purposes, it’s a nice additional feature of the garments.

Be sure to check out pieces like the following, to get started:
